BACKGROUND
Leah Gcabashe graduated with a BA in
Administration from the University of Lesotho in 1978;
BA (Law) from the University of Cambridge UK in 1982;
LLB in 1987 from the University of Natal/Durban; MA
(Hon) from the University of Cambridge UK in 1988 and
in 2005 a LLM in Human Rights and Constitutional Law.
Leah has Board Membership in the Penryn
Trust and the Shalamuka Trust; an educational institution
with a community outreach programme (Penreach) that
assists in developing teaching skills. Its funding vehicle
is the Shalamuka Trust. As well as board membership
in Aveng (Pty) Ltd; a corporation with business interests
in the construction industry.
RECENT PRACTICE HISTORY
Leah has been practicing as an Attorney
since 1988 and she has been practicing at Pitje Chambers
from 2001 to date.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
1988-1995: Leah was a Candidate Attorney,
serving under Linda Zama and later George Webster. She
was then appointed as a lecturer at the Faculty of Law
at the University of Natal/Durban. Then admitted as
an Attorney in 1991.
1995: Leah was appointed Senior Lecturer
at the Department of Public Law at the University of
Natal/Durban.
1997: She was admitted as an Advocate
of the High Court of South Africa; served on the Amnesty
Committee of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
1999-2001: Leah was appointed Chief
Director and Head of Legal Services in the Presidency.
2005-2006: As a member of the Johannesburg
Society of Advocates; she was appointed Acting Judge
in The Natal Provincial Division of The High Court,
The Durban and Coastal Local Division of The High Court,
The Bophuthatswana High Court and The Witwatersrand
Local Division of The High Court.
